2018 Officers and Chairs

President

I am an avid drummer (self taught) and have been playing since I was 4 (not always very well mind you!) but have had the good fortune to have played with some very talented musicians who have helped me to improve my own playing along the way. I’ve been car crazy since building my first model at the age of 5, I am also very passionate about driving, both on the open road and on the track. To this end, I have been fortunate to acquire a personal collection of vehicles that touch on my personality. I feel blessed to have had the opportunities in my life that have challenged me to be the best that I can be and I look forward to each day as such.

Vice President & Driving Tour Chair

Mark Frumkin is a life-long resident of the Hazleton area.

Secretary

Eddie and Trish became friends with Mark and Lynn Frumkin when they moved to Beech Mountain Lakes. Mark and Lynn talked about how great the Christmas party and the club was, so there was only one thing to do, buy a Porsche so we could join the club and attend the party.  Trish has no experience with cars, but enjoys the events, activities and especially the members. As  Safety Chair, she learned a lot regarding how the club operates and will continue to learn as Secretary.

Treasurer

From Ken – Treasurer Emeritus and Continuous, a gearhead who prefers working on his car rather than pay a professional to do the work. That’s why his car hasn’t run in a year and a half.

But all of the savings from not going to the track have been very beneficial to paying for my daughter’s wedding.

2016 October Drive & Dine Gallery

Our Annual October Drive and Dine today saw 42 for breakfast and 18 cars spend an afternoon traversing some fabulous Pennsylvania country side. And a hay ride and a catered dinner at Hillside Farms. Thanks to Chuck and other officers and members of Pocono who made this a complete success. Best ride ever! Thanks to Cheryl Taylor, our Zone 2 Rep, for joining us. This was as good as it gets!

A big ‘Thank You!’ for the header pic!

There were a bunch of P-Cars parked at Grotto Pizza for last night’s Member Meeting, and since it was a Tuesday night in September and the summer crowd isn’t on the lake, more than half the cars in the lot were Porsches. The crew from Grotto was taking the opportunity to admire the cars and, while I was taking some pictures for a Facebook post, one of them approached me and offered a panorama he’d taken with this phone.

Needless to say, I asked him to send it to me and our site boasts a new header pic.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get his name, but if he sees this: Thanks for the awesome shot!

Maybe John needs an apprentice?

New Member Breakfast and Poker Run

From: Mark Frumkin, President, POCONO Region
Date: 05/25/2016 10:04 AM (GMT-05:00)
To: Regions Editor
Subject: Pocono New Member Breakfast and Poker Run

Hi Linda,

Pocono Region held its new member breakfast and first ever poker run on Saturday the 19th of May. The new member breakfast was well attended at Perkins in Wilkes-Barre Pa with 20-plus members and new members in attendance.

The poker run following the breakfast was well attended as well with 10 cars following a scenic and curvy “Pocono” route which climbed up the Giants Despair Hill Climb Route,  traversed Francis Walter Dam (stopping for a card) and on to Lackawanna Welcome center at Montage for another card.  From there around some of the areas best switch back roads along the Upper Susquehanna River, and finally to the Tipsy Turtle restaurant at Avoca Airport for the last of the five cards at 1:15.

Dinner certificates to the top three and Porsche related gifts to all the drivers in attendance.

The weather held (mostly) for us and a great time was had by all.

Thank you!

Mark

Simeone Auto Museum

Some of us got an early start with breakfast an Van Guilder’s Jubilee, and six cars met at the Hickory Run Service Plaza for a spirited drive to Philadelphia. Len was attending an NSX event, so he brought his beautiful red Acura along for the drive. On arriving, we were mistaken for part of Southern New Jersey Region, who had parking set aside for them in the back of the museum. Randy parked his 928 and Shawn his 944 among the 911s, Boxsters, and Caymans of the SNJ folks, which is sure to cause confusion when they spot the two oddball cars in the background of their group picture!

Of course, the focus of the trip was the ‘Demo Day’ of the German sportscars. This is a special feature of Dr. Simeone’s museum, wherein they bring out a handful of priceless automotive artifacts, fire them up, and drive them around the back of the museum. This weekend was ‘Der Best von Deutchland’, and the cars were a 1927 Mercedes Benz Sportwagen, a 1937 BMW 328, a 1956 Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing, and a 1970 Porsche 917LH. Dr. Simeone gave a short talk about the historical significance of the each model, and what made each of these cars individually special.

For instance: The BMW was hidden in a barn in the Netherlands at the beginning of World War II to keep it from the Germans. Over the years, more hay was piled on it and it was forgotten. It wasn’t rediscovered until 1980! At that point the owner contacted Dr. Simeone and asked the doctor to buy the car for his collection because the owner wanted it left as it was, and not frame-up restored to better-than-new, which was normal at the time. The car appears as it was found, and it’s gorgeous. It runs like a new car.

The 917LH is the special long-tail version of the incredibly powerful, flat-12 917 race car. This car is the last of the Le Mans ‘sportscar’ class, which was replaced by the ‘prototype’ class afterward. Thie 917 has two seats and enough lights to at least theoretically be a road car. It won second overall that year and still holds the record for top speed on the Mulsanne Straight: 240mph!

Dr. Simeone’s collection essentially ends with this 917 because Le Mans moved to the prototype class. You can’t collect everything, and the doctor decided to concentrate on classic ‘drive to the race, race it, drive it home’ sportscars that ruled international motorsports racing in the 30s through 60s.

It was amazing hearing these cars fire up and drive (except for the Mercedes Sportwagen, which was having a fuel supply issue). The BMW and 300SL sounded like modern roadcars. The 917 sounded like a cross between a six-cylinder 911 and a tractor.

The remainder of the museum was just as amazing and full of incredibly rare, stunning, and significant cars. The day started cold, but finished beautifully in the 60s and a sunny afternoon drive back to NEPA. This was a treat for any car enthusiast, so plan on going again next year!
